An odd question: the colour of bruising Apr. 9th, 2012 @ 11:23 am
I seek to learn: What colours do bruises go to and through for people with non-white skin?

See, I am thoroughly familiar with the way bruising works for white people, on account of I am white, and have, on occasion, acquired some spectacular bruises. (For the most recent example, see: "Breaking my leg in three places, then having orthopaedic surgery." This causes bruising for which the word spectacular is barely adequate.)

However, I have no idea how bruising affects skin less pale than mine. Are the colours different? Are they even visible? That stage where it's all just pale yellow, how does that look? I feel extrapolating from "how different it looks on me when I have a tan" is risky.

This is one of those topics I'm slightly afraid to google in case I find something I didn't actually want to.

But it's frustrating to me, because at the moment, I'm partly stuck on a couple of stories I want to write that have centrally-placed non-white characters because I have to write awkwardly around getting them even slightly hurt, where white characters can get as beaten up as the plot demands because I know what that looks like.

So... If you have any knowledge of any other skin type's bruising and are willing to share, please tell me?

So here's the thing Apr. 19th, 2011 @ 03:22 pm
I'm a couple of weeks behind on my reading page again.

However, this post is actually for an Ask The Internet.

I have a Certain Friend who, despite all its... problems... still uses LiveJournal. And doesn't crosspost from DW because she doesn't like the DW interface.

She really, genuinely likes the default appearance of LJ.

Does anyone know how to make DW look like that?

Asking the Internet: Gifts taking eye problems into account... Mar. 29th, 2011 @ 04:32 pm
So, a friend of a friend has just suffered an injury to one eye. Currently has no sight, doctors have some hope that they *maybe* can reclaim *some* sight.

In the meantime, he's hospitalised. I think everyone can agree that being in hospital is boring and annoying and it sucks even before you factor in only having one functional eye, which tends to make doing anything that involves looking at stuff annoying, up to and including things like reading.

So. Dude is a nice guy, and also a nerd. Does anyone have any suggestions for toys/games/entertainments that don't require depth perception or a lot of visual focus in general, and can be taken to and played with at a hospital?

I'm also planning to troll thinkgeek and the like for fun things that look like they'll work without depth perception etc as entertainment, but it's entirely possible there's things that wouldn't occur to me at all.

(My default gift for people in hospital is something like Lego, but I don't know how annoying Lego would be without depth perception...)

Someone who knows more about them than me may well be reading this, so:

If one were to post an image, and wanted to add a detailed description of the image for the benefit of people using screenreaders without breaking the flow of text redundantly for people who *can* see the image, does putting the description in as alt text on the image work?

Hm. Oct. 12th, 2010 @ 04:36 am
I'm not sure anyone reading this won't already be aware of the utter crazy hell happening, but the latest update confuses me somewhat.

Who is Catherine Young, that maybe witnessing something at her old trailer is enough to make people try to destroy someone's life?

Asking the internet: blog accessibility Sep. 24th, 2009 @ 10:30 am
So, I'm gradually nudging my Proper Blog into shape, which includes having just changed the (WordPress) theme because the one I had did not work at all for posting pictures, for a start.

My new theme is a *bit* flawed - I don't love the colours, mostly - but it has nice clean lines, variable width, and is (or claims to be) accessible for screenreaders etc.

I don't have a screen reader thingy, so I'm not sure how I verify this.

Which results in two primary questions to ask the internet:

1) Is there some kind of website or the like that, I don't know, has a script that can check your page and tell you if it's genuinely accessible?

I'd like it to be - for purely abstract reasons, realistically, since at present I'm fairly sure no-one at all reads my Proper Blog, and therefore no matter how high, the proportion of my blog readership that might prefer accessible web design still works out to zero people. But as I put content there and stuff people might start reading it, you never knwo.

2) What's the best way to make image tags be helpful on this point? I'd like to include a description of images I post, for the benefit of people who for whatever reason can't see the images themselves, but I like elegance in things. Is it alt text, or what, that I should be using to try and include that data in the tag, where it won't break into the flow of post text?

Or is that not possible? In which case the question becomes: If I put image descriptions in a smaller font, so they seem (to me) less intrusive, is that going to interfere in any way with accessibility, or does that not matter?

Seriously, nobody reads my Proper Blog, so this isn't important, but at the same time, I AM CURRENTLY A CRAZY PERSON AND MY BRAIN HAS FIXATED ON THIS BEING VERY IMPORTANT so I'm asking the internet.

And no, it's not an ablist thing to make reference to craziness, I am a person with some mental illness issues who is completely off her meds and not able to take more for another couple of days, I am, in fact and actually, currently as crazypants as any one person can realistically get away with.

Asking the Internet: UK Connectivity Sep. 1st, 2009 @ 03:14 pm
So, here's the thing: I'm planning a trip to the UK. Possibly around November.

Now, there's a number of things that I want to have Sorted before I go. Some of them are basically paperwork here in Perth, but there are some important points to consider regarding my digital lifestyle and the maintenance of my mental health while I'm away (as well as that of people who love me and might otherwise worry).

It is genuinely important that I have internet and mobile phone access while I'm there.

Given that my plan involves going on a self-directed tour of Great Britain, the internet part becomes a bit of an issue. I'll be taking a laptop (my notebook, my EEE, or both), both because I wouldn't be able to handle that long without a computer and because I'll need somewhere to clear off the many, many photos I intend to take. My generalised aim is to hire a car and drive around Britain - I want to visit Land's End and John o'Groats and as many interesting places in between as I can.

I'll also be visiting relatives in England and northern Scotland, as well as my Ancestral Home, the "family seat" as my uncle calls it - a farm my family has worked for about 900 years.

A lot of the mentions of it if you google the place are megalith-related discussions of the stone circle there. Which is a little odd for me, because while those stones are historically relevant and meaningful and so on, they are marked first, in my heart, as the place where my grandparents' ashes were scattered.

Anyway, what I'm actually looking for advice on is the following things:

- Pre-paid mobile phone service. I've looked into it, and it should be trivial to take an Australian phone to the UK. Ours are triband by default now, and at least one UK provider seems to work on 3G. The phone I currently have, but have been considering replacing, is, I believe, a standard triband whatever; I'm thinking of getting another, but it still should be easy to take to the UK and just throw in a new SIM card.

Hence, I'm seeking recommendations for mobile phone providers, I guess.

- USB mobile broadband options. Again, I'd very much rather get pre-paid. Getting a contract when I'm only going to be there a few weeks seems silly.

For this I *will* need to get the modem - the one I have is locked to its network - but the options I've seen on quick googling are either two pounds a day, which: suboptimal, or else is 10 pounds per gigabyte, which would probably work out cheaper, but I'd like to look at the best option I can get. But I also want it to have reasonable coverage around Britain, so I'm eager for recommendations if anyone knows anything about this.

What's *really* important is being able to check e-mail, DW/LJ when I have the time, and keep in contact with my loved ones, as well as perhaps putting up the odd photo, since I plan to take many of them. (I will be taking my Good Camera and plenty of space for storing the pictures.)

I remember hearing people discussing travel, and how it would be better to remember things than just keep taking photos of everything. For me, though, my memory isn't that awesome, and taking photos is something I love to do and which actively contributes to my enjoyment of an experience.

So, yes. Any suggestions?

Asking the Internet: Computer Performance Issues Jul. 8th, 2009 @ 09:31 pm
So, my laptop is an Asus M50v. Lately it's seemed like it's been running rather hot, which is of moderate concern to me. Performance has seemed vaguely slow here and there but I'm not sure.

Where there seems to be a problem: Left 4 Dead (just installed tonight) runs like a cow. That's been shot.

It shouldn't. It's an Intel Core Duo processor (~2.5GHz I think) with Nvidia 9600M GS graphics card. Computer has 4GB of RAM.

Anyone have any idea what's going wrong, here?

Asking the internet Apr. 28th, 2009 @ 12:20 pm
So, here's the thing.

I know from reading posts like this that certain things my hair does are quite common with some types of hair more common in people of non-European/non-Asian descent.

However, I think that on the scale of asking non-white people to Represent Their Race, going up to random black people with nice hair and saying, "Your hair is awesome! How do you do it?" might come across just ever-so-slightly wrong.

The trouble is, I don't actually know anyone with hair like mine, and I've only seen people talk about hair like mine in the context of dealing with "black" hair. Most of it's fine - it's thick, it's curly, I haven't had it cut or trimmed in at least three years so I have slight split ends I'll get around to having trimmed at some point, and I manage it by being sure to use conditioner and keeping it braided almost all the time to keep it the hell out of my face, and it doesn't bother me. (And I can surprise people on special occasions by busting out some serious curls.)

But the hair near my neck refuses to get long, so it won't go into the braid, and it sticks out in ways I find both irksome and kind of distracting. That hair is tangly, kinky, and fragile. It gets about three or four inches long and then it gets tangly and knotty (even self-knotting) and breaks a lot.

Anyone know what I should do to maintain it better?
