Someone who knows more about them than me may well be reading this, so:
If one were to post an image, and wanted to add a detailed description of the image for the benefit of people using screenreaders without breaking the flow of text redundantly for people who *can* see the image, does putting the description in as alt text on the image work?

That's pretty much the entire purpose of alt text; it's alternate text for if you can't see the image. Screenreaders will indeed take note of it.
PS: The title attribute is for the text that appears on mouseover.

The alt text also has the advantage, wrt screen readers, of not running out of space the way title text sometimes can.
