... sometimes, you get a story that just lets you feel like there's progress in the world. Like speaking up does, in fact, make a difference.

It's the KRXQ saga. Shock jocks spend half an hour advocating violence against children who show potential transgender characteristics.

Horrible, right?

And yet, awesome.

Because the radio station had sponsors.

Past tense.

Companies to withdraw sponsorship of the station, and in some cases make a point of telling GLAAD about it (not avoiding gay cooties so much as making a point of ensuring GLAAD knows they're doing things GLAAD will approve of:

  • Chipotle
  • Snapple
  • Sonic
  • Bank of America
  • Verizon
  • Carl’s Jr (CKE Restaurants)
  • Wells Fargo
  • Nissan North America
  • AT&T
  • McDonald’s

Seriously!

It is now considered not only commercially valid, but necessary, to distance your company from that kind of thing as fast as you possibly can.

I'm not sure which is actually more awesome, to be honest, though. Yanking your advertising and making a point of telling GLAAD, so they can tell everyone else, or just doing it and then, when GLAAD asks, just being all "yeah, we pulled our ads from them because they suck, thanks for asking".

Nissan's is kind of hilariously low-stress though, I suspect. The broadcast happened on the 28th of May. Their contract was due for renewal on the first of June. So they're just not renewing. No pulling to deal with, just: "eh, cancel the renewal".

Even if this is just a single radio station, so the bad-PR-vs-loss-of-advertising decision is easier than it might be? I still call this a victory for the forces of right.

Rock on.

Ooh, the list is longer by quite a bit than when I saw the story earlier (then it was only Chipotle, BofA, Carl's, and Verizon). \o/

Fuck yes.

After all the terribleness that has gone down this week, I am glad that something is going relatively well.

Also, the contact for Nissan was very pleasant in email.  I was pleased.

I know, right?

Sometimes, I think, it's easy to get lost in GAH BADNESS DOOOOOM and forget that, hey, sometimes, good things are going on.

I'm currently watching netball. Self-confident women with healthy bodies - even a couple who are large by the standards of Beauty Myths and crap like that, except, hi, they're TOP-LEVEL ATHLETES so screw you, people who'd call them "fat and unhealthy" - playing sport with dedication and intensity.

Their fanbase is mostly young girls, too, so the way they present themselves is so *positive* - they don't do stuff that exploits them as OMG Hot Chix because they're out to be the image they'd want their daughters to see. Player profile sections today were interviews with some players who share a house, and showing that some of them are girly girls who like shoes and makeup, and some of them totally aren't, and some of them cook, some of them don't, but each of them owns who they are, flaws and virtues alike, with pride and confidence.

Even if they have their doubts and insecurities, that's not quite what they show, because these are women who are not perfect, but they're good role models for the young girls who are their fans, and it's just another thing that really makes me feel good about the world.

Look at Vilimaina Davu. She's stocky and solid - despite being 190cm tall, which means she's about 6'4" of muscle and strength and she's an athlete good enough to have played for Fiji AND New Zealand. And she's out there telling girls to believe in themselves, and seriously how awesome is she? Especially for all those girls who feel like freaks because they're tall or big or both.

*fangirls shamelessly*

If the hormone-free meat and the fact that their tomatoes defy the normal standard of fast-food tomatoes by actually being good wasn't already enough for me to not mind paying $9-10 for lunch from Chipotle, this would definately be enough to seal the deal.
