That is all kinds of awesome! It looks like general access costs £74.95 p.a or £14.95 p.month or £4.95 p.day to search.
Yeah, that makes sense. It would have been a hell of a project and I can't really criticise them for wanting to get money for it.
*hugs university-based access*
Wow - can you post a link to that?!?!?
Um, the public one seems to be here (http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/). It's a totally different interface from the one I've been using, but the one I've been using is the academic access one, which requires subscriptions of relevant institutions. (I initially got there from my university library's catalogue.)
*grins*
The Internet is awesome, isn't it?
I've been looking at stuff about the Crimean War, because I read a reference in a book about W.H. Russell's telegram dispatches from the Crimea being the first instance of immediate, on-the-spot reporting on war that really affected the people back in Britain, as it showed the discombobulation of the troops, which I found interesting. But there's no end of things to look at, really.
And honestly, looking at it online is a lot less unnerving than looking at original copies of books published in the 18th century. SO OLD SO FRAGILE WHAT IF I BREAK IT etc.
btw, confirmed: You need university access for the Infotrac thing. I can only access the academic interface via connection to my university VPN. :)
The public interface looks a little more annoying (though I admit it is prettier), but I'm sure it's the same content, so... up to you if you want to subscribe, I guess?
