But this, you see, is why "I asked !single.minority.person about it, and they said it was okay!" is not a valid argument, ever. One person thinking something is okay does not speak for everyone.

I mean, it's just statistically irrelevant!  *flails*

One phrase that's always bothered me is "I have a $minority friend who says $bar, so $foo isn't how it is with $minority folk!".  "My female friend cracks up at sexist jokes, so sexist jokes are okay!"  It's as though they've never considered the idea that things might be looser between friends than between random people.

Exactly! And also that people might not want to get into !issue with people with whom social awkwardness would be detrimental in some way, whether friends' circle/professional relationships/etc. Or on a day when they were just too tired to argue about it. Etc.

Gah, tell me about it.  I've had the occasional time when half-heartedly chuckling at a sexist joke was more workplace-friendly than calling my coworker on it.  Since the economy is sucking, I try not to ruffle more feathers than is necessary, and sometimes that means sucking it up.  And I'm sure somewhere, some coworker or ex-coworker is using me as an example of "women who find sexist jokes funny, so it's not a problem".

...I have just made myself twitchy.  Fantastic.
