Uni, day two

My pain continues: I was all set to poke the internet through this lecture, and then discovered... SNAP doesn't reach in here.
Also, the previous class (run, according to comments I overheard by a student who was in it, by "the most boring man on the PLANET") didn't turn on the air-conditioning in here and the room is hot and muggy and sticky. It's not that hot this morning, but it's extremely humid, and this room is currently substantially warmer than it is outside.
I turned the A/C on, because I Know How Shit Stuff Works around here.
(Today is Shrove Tuesday. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. I decided to try and stop swearing for Lent, and I can't remember offhand whether Lent starts today or tomorrow.)
Assessment so far of the class: theducks's cousin is in it.
Heh, the lecturer just arrived. Looks around classroom. "Is the air con on?" Me: "Yeah. But I only just turned it on when we came in."
Him: "Oh. Right."
FAIL, PREVIOUS LECTURER
More random things:
Him: It's really disconcerting for there to be no-one talking when it's still, by the clock, three minutes to ten. Me: Before you came in we were all plotting against you, but now we've had to stop. Him: Thank God I remembered to take my paranoia pills this morning.
I am Old and relatively confident, and also, I have met him before more than once, and I know he does in fact have a sense of humour.
There's a MAKE HOWARD HISTORY sticker on the back of a chair a couple of rows in front of me. He was dropped by the nation as a whole in late 2007...
Thankfully, the a/c is starting to kick in in here.
"Has anyone tried logging in to CMO lately? It's down... in a very down way. Depressed even."
Oh dear, he just emphasised: "There's no such thing as a stupid question. What's stupid is not asking the question." Urge to prove him wrong... rising...
He's exhorting people to attend lectures, rather than relying on Lectopia. Fortunately, he acknowledge the "if you genuinely have a clash" element, because... I do. I don't know which lecture I'm going to be defaulting to attending, but this week, at least, I really have to go to my other class on Thursday, so I'll be skipping the second lecture on this unit. (If something comes up in this lecture which indicates my lecture on Thursdayfor this is unskippable, I'll cry have to talk to the lecturer about it, because I have yet to acquire the knack of being in two places at once.
Chas has suggested I set a Time to listen to the recording of the lecture I don't attend, and make sure I do it Then every week. It's probably a very good idea.
We're talking content now. Time to try and pay attention and resist my urge to pull up my Kabuto fic and work on it while I should be learning about phonetics and phonology. *opens Wordpad window to take notes*
The first exercise involved using the English alphabet to spell a word with non-English sound values.
A woman just came in (really very late) with a small boy in tow. I'm inclined to be more sympathetic to her extreme lateness because she's walking with a cane and has a small boy in tow. (I totally don't object to the child coming into class so long as he's not disruptive, and he doesn't look like he will be. I think this kind of thing should be acceptable, really.)
We're doing stuff I totally know backwards and forwards, but I've done the first half of this unit before.
Of course, it helps to be in this position when he asks the class a question and everyone else sits in stunned silence. When he repeats the question differently phrased, clearly seeking a response, I can give it.
Oh dear, I disagree with the explanation he's giving on an example data set. It's possible he's simplifying for a first-lecture example, it's possibly -
oh, wait, it's possible I'm wrong because I'm clearly too tired and was misreading the data. I'm glad I didn't speak up on that one.
Hee, the kid just started making a noise. His mother shushed him and looked mortified. The reaction of the class was an indulgent chuckle.
Oh look, we're talking about minimal pairs. I'm surprised it took this long.
The way some sound values just sound totally equivalent to people for whose native languages they're not a meaningful distinction fascinates me. The way English speakers don't really distinguish aspiration on /p/ or /b/ or the like, Japanese speakers /r/ and /l/, Arrernte speakers /t/ and /d/. It's so strange.
later
And now I'm home to post.

"We're doing stuff I totally know backwards and forwards, but I've done the first half of this unit before."
Bad! Lecture two is too early to be getting complacent. Leave that for "well I need 25% on the exam to pass" once you've nailed the first few assessment tasks.
Heh. Even worse, that was the first lecture. Yesterday was history.
The second lecture is the one I may be skipping entirely. (Due to a clash, but still...)
I'm liking the liveblogging.
It's making me miss uni, though.
You may not be the only one.
I am easily persuaded. I'll keep up the liveblogging, while I still have things to say.
you should do timestamps on your comments :)
That occurred to me, and it's not impossible I'll do it, but it's very much an "if I can be bothered, and if it won't distract me too much from keeping up with the lecture" thing.

R,
It's a moot point by now, but Ash Wednesday (as opposed to Shrove Tuesday) is the first day of Lent.
Love you always, and I remember well the University's chairs. They still give my back nightmares sometimes.....
Keep strong,
M.
