I have now been formally properly assessed for ADD.

On a scale from 1 to 10, my diagnosis is OH GOD HOW DO YOU FUNCTION. Next step: seeing my GP to get a referral to a psychiatrist who specialises in ADD and can prescribe the relevant medication, taking with me a letter also from my clinical psychologist explaining she's tested me and NO REALLY SHE HAS FERRETS IN HER BRAIN.

You should get a cool hat, like a fedora or a bowler hat or a homburg. But not a top hat. And not a boater.

Not a boater, for sure. Fedoras are somehow for men in my head. Homburg is a maybe, bowlers are cool but I associate them with a specific person, why not a top hat?

Top hats are awesome and I rock them hard.

Well you could have a top hat but you'd need to have a cane to go with it.

Well then, do it.

Also with a top hat you have more room for ferrets :P

Or tiny Samis numbered A to Z and the last one will turn all your snow from pink to white and defeat communism.

On the grand scale of animals to have in one's brain, ferrets are quite intelligent!

Also, diagnostics are good to have - I know that clarity on a subject always brings me a kind of peace. Go you!

Ferrets are intelligent, yes, but OOH LOOK AT THE SHINY SHINY, is the problem, and if I don't keep my listening ferret, my doing ferret, my seeing ferret, and my fidgeting ferret all occupied things go very badly, and NONE of them have an attention span longer than about thirty seconds.

Fucking ferrets.

:hopes:

I'm really excited about the potential for this to improve my ability to do uni work. The whole concept of being able to concentrate for longer periods is just thrilling.

I hope that this treatment will be the help that you've been needing!

All of us in my family realize now that Bob had ADD that was never diagnosed. It explained so much of his self-destructive behavior. It's too bad that, at the time, ADD wasn't well-known, especially in adults. Maybe he'd still be with us today :-/

I'll be thinking of and praying for you.

Thank you.

It's really making me reconsider so much about my entire life - so much that I've always hated myself for is explained by the natural consequences of having ADD in a world that's not structured for it. And, too, the incredible frustration of things being difficult that seem like they should be easy - I can start to let go of that, because it's not a failing in me that they're hard for me to handle, I'm just wired differently.

I can feel for Bob, too. I'll light a candle for him. Living with this in a world where no-one's really heard of it would be so terribly difficult.

I'm glad you finally have a diagnosis and I hope treatment works very well for you!

*grins* It really kind of was like that. Looking over the results, my psych was wide-eyed and asking me delicate questions about how, in fact, I do get anything done.

And it's fairly simple. If I have to write an essay, for example, I have an essay-writing window, a game of FreeCell, music playing, a couple of Internet tabs open, and I just rotate through them all, writing a sentence or so every time I go past the text editor.

Isn't that how everyone does it? :shifty eyes:

R,

It's how I've always done it.

But then again, I'm pretty sure that I'm just undisciplined :).

Kick this thing, R. You've beaten everything else, you can beat this!

When you need some encouragement, I would suggest going to YouTube and looking at the Seekers' "Keep A Dream In Your Pocket". That has frequently helped me keep going.
