Idly: I am still bitter about Terrence Howard getting dropped for Don Cheadle as Rhodey.
Terrence Howard has presence. He is perfect Rhodey and perfect War Machine. In the first movie he looks, speaks, and moves like a hero.
Don Cheadle is a weeble. He manages to look dorky and daggy even in an Air Force uniform, which should not technically be possible.
Terrence Howard will always be Rhodey in my heart.
Why the hell did they recast him, and why, if they had to recast him, couldn't they get anyone better than Terrence Howard? I refuse to believe that the entire list of heroic-looking black actors is "Terrence Howard and Idris Elba".
Before anyone asks why I don't know anyone else to suggest, a) I liked Terrence Howard and would therefore nominate him to be Rhodey again, dammit, and b) I pretty much don't watch movies and I watch very little TV, so I don't know, you know, actors. Unless they're in Avengers-related movies.
Although, having said that, I've been on a West Wing first-couple-of-seasons nostalgia-sort-of kick lately, and Dulé Hill could probably do Rhodey justice. He had a certain gravitas when he was, like, 24/25, I don't doubt he could be War Machine now.

I give you exhibits: a: Eamon Walker, b: David Harewood, c: Peter Mensah, and d: David Ramsey. That last link is to my collection of David Ramsey as John Diggle screencaps on tumblr. He alone is a reason to watch Arrow. Yeah, I love Don Cheadle but there are a boatload of actors who could be better cast. Edited (sorry about the borked html) 2013-05-12 03:09 pm (UTC)

... Yep. All of them!
Of those, I like Eamon Walker best as Rhodey, but they're all definitely decently Heroic-type to be Rhodey. (Or David Ramsey, actually. The firefighter outfit throws bias towards Walker.)
I confess I don't love Don Cheadle, but then, I have seen him in exactly zero other roles, so my view of him is basically entirely "he is the guy who is failtastic at being Rhodey".
I really don't watch much TV/movies. I went through the black actors in all the things I've been watching in the last several years, and I was like... "Clint from White Collar is too stocky for the War Machine suit, probably. Bell from Elementary is too young." And then I got stuck for a while, because other than that it's Person of Interest, where of the four lead roles one is a black person, but somehow I can't see Carter as War Machine, and RuPaul's Drag Race ahahahaha not quite no.
(Although the thought of the hilarious meltdown it would trigger for the people who had to try and make it look like Robert Downey Jr and RuPaul Charles were close to the same height, alone, might almost make that casting worth it.)
I don't know why he was recast either (and wiki doesn't know either, although it has some vague comments), but I do know that despite my face-blindness it led to me not realising Rhodey was in IM2 until a long way in. Hey, Dulé Hill is too busy being the iii in wait for it (or, as this points out, the only black lead on a major US cable network).

... you win "link that has most confused me in some time". Partly because "what is an iii in a wait for it" and partly because those gifs also make NO SENSE.
Does... does the guy keep telling Gus not to be those things? What show is this? etc.
Also, though, EXACTLY MY POINT, Don Cheadle isn't Rhodeyish at all.
Although I also didn't get that far into IM2 because I got *so bored* and wasn't watching it at a cinema.
It's from Psych! Sorry, I thought you'd seen it. Shawn is always telling Gus (Dule Hill's character) to not be random things that rarely make a lot of sense. (And, think of it as "wait for iiiiiiit".)
I was also not watching IM2 in the cinema, but I was with friends, so.

Don Cheadle grew on me a little in IM3 but yeah, I'm sad about it too.
I'm sure Dule Hill could pull it off, but the cognitive dissonance of him holding a gun and being all militaristic is hurting my brain a little since all the roles I've seen him in have been very...not gun weilding-y.
(*stares sadly at "gun weilding-y", feeling fairly sure there is a better word but unable to think of one* Can you tell I wrote this at 2am?)

It's true, my active disdain lessened too, although: still a weeble. It's like, I wouldn't have objected to his role in general except that he was supposed to be Rhodey, and NO.
Regarding Hill, I totally get it, because physical violence is not his strain of awesome as Charlie (the only role I've seen him in), but that's the beauty of War Machine! When things get violent, he's generally in the suit. And the suit, the suit totally has the militaristic look going.

There's also Psych, where he is the irritated and somewhat cowardly sidekick to a very Tony-ish detective :)

Here looking at my network. I understood that Howard was trouble on the set and wanted more money than Marvel would pay for the sequel. (This is no way justifies it, just explains-Marvel is notoriously stingy with actors.)
