My mother and I were just discussing a leaflet campaign she read of, wherein PETA allegedly asserted that the consumption of meat is responsible, among other things, for conflict in the Middle East, claiming that kosher and halal methods of animal slaughter were vicious and cruel and therefore made the conflicting parties more likely to slaughter each other.
Yes, I know.
Anyway, I remarked that, to the best of my knowledge, halal meat must be slaughtered humanely, or it's not halal. But then I realised that I don't know anything about kosher animal slaughter - despite having read quite a bit about it.
You see, the descriptions I read, which did claim to be fact, were 1930s Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda pieces, which you might say don't constitute a reliable source.
And I realised that I have quite a lot of data in my head that I've acquired, in the course of studying history, but which is mentally flagged as propaganda and which I therefore assume is probably not true. (Or, if it contains a kernel of truth, is nonetheless mostly not true.)
It's odd.

Interesting.
And, much as I suspected, there is a tiny kernel of technically-truth around which was built a superstructure of massive massive lies in the Nazi propaganda version.
Mind you, I think my propaganda-flagging mental skills were first formed on this specific thing, because I read it quite a long time ago and recall feeling my first rush of critical skepticism. Along the lines of: "If that's true, then it's sort of horrible, but I don't think it's really justification for the rest, and also, I doubt it's true..."
As for PETA: I sputtered slightly recently when they did Yet Another Stupid Thing, making a flash game in which skinless raccoons chase Mario - as in the Nintendo character - because PETA object to the raccoon fur in Mario's raccoony form.
Conveniently ignoring that a) MARIO IS PIXELS and b) Mario transforms into the raccoon hybrid by means of magic (as of the last Mario game I played that featured it, this took place when he caught a magic feather), and therefore the fur is patently HIS OWN DAMN FUR.
I sometimes wonder if PETA is secretly run by fur-wearing, endangered-species-hunting, meat-loving sociopaths specifically to make vegetarians and animal rights activists look bad.
