So, my good buddy Dean has a viciously nasty virus (a version of XP AntiVirus 2010) on her computer right now. She, Chas, and housemate.Dave have all been trying to clean it for around an hour now - this is with three highly competent computery types, with multiple other computers to help, good antivirus stuff, all of that. Lots of complicated strategies I don't even understand.
She got it by visiting livejournal.com on a free account (therefore seeing ads) in Internet Explorer. She did nothing else. And there were no unpatched holes that could have been patched, since - coincidentally - she ran Windows update this morning.
So Dean has a nasty virus, and it's almost completely guaranteed that the infection vector was a LiveJournal.com ad.
Be very careful, and warn your friends.
