So, hilarious thing.
My laptop? With all the malfunctioning?
Seems to have been *creative*.
See, it reported that it had copied all the files in my /2009/ directory, which contains all my uni work, to my external hard drive.
That's not the funny bit.
The funny bit is that it actually only copied about half of them.
Can you guess which subdirectory it missed almost all of? This is the hilarious bit.
It missed almost all of my "Field Linguistics" directory.
Missing: about six hours or so of transcription work.
Missing: all of my "field notes" on elicitation sessions. Those are unrecoverable if my laptop's hard drive is fucked.
ARE YOU LAUGHING YET? I AM LAUGHING SO HARD RIGHT NOW. LAUGHING, LAUGHING, LAUGHING.
I am going to take my laptop to the Asus service centre now.

Someday soon I'm gonna back up everything on my HD that's worth it. And when I do, it will be copied to another digital thingie; printed out (unless it's a photo or something that's not worth printing on my crappy printer); *and* saved to google docs. Obviously, not something I'll keep up every time I make a minor change to a WIP.
Not trying to be superior, as currently the only things backed up are things I emailed to myself for various reasons. (Dear Grey Goose II, please keep behaving well. Just a little longer - I want to unfinish packing.)

The tragic thing is, I thought I had. But the computer reported that it had copied data across, and it hadn't.
As far as multiple backups go - I'm going to start storing *some* of the field notes data places like my web server, but I hadn't yet. (The half-gig audio data files I'll have to redownload from the servers at uni - which I can do when I'm on campus, because downloading gigabytes of data is better done via intranet for EVERYONE'S benefit.)
