About I like animals.

This afternoon, I decided that what I really needed was some fresh air and a nice walk, so I went to the Zoo to play with my new camera. I arrived about 40 minutes before they closed, but that's fine, because I'm a Zoo Friend so I get in free.

More photos are uploaded to the Animals section of my photo gallery, but here's one:

Funny story: I was walking past the lion enclosure and didn't realise it, because I was on the other side of a screen of bamboo from the lions' habitat. Suddenly, from just a few feet away, I heard a lion roar, then growl. Another lion growled back. Then two lions seemed to be having a vocal argument.

I can say with confidence that a lion's roar, heard up close and unexpectedly, is freaking scary.

I love lions. And I am all gringling at your story of the unexpected lion roars. Yes, I should think SO.

We had a funny when I was little (not the body, just me). It was an ASAR outing at the Oakland Zoo, where the lions have part of a savanna with a treed creek area on a hillside. It's well-fenced, with a viewing platform that's above the ground level of the fence in places.

There was a maintenance worker there that day down by the fence, and one of the not-quite fullgrown but huge males took exception to him being so close and snarled and coughed at him... and then turned around and sprayed the area liberally.

Until then none of us realised big cats did that, just like small cats.

A large male lion sprays a LOT when he sprays.

That poor maintenance worker... o.O
