Moments of Permanence - October 7th, 2009

About October 7th, 2009

A couple more idle notes 08:39 am
1) At Longleat, they have some statuette things, a couple of centuries old, called "blackamoors".

These are decorative pillars for bowls on top that would hold oil, which you would light - that flaming pool effect you still see in movies occasionally. But for this, the pillars are statues of African slaves holding up the bowls.

The curious thing about them is that they're borderline protest art. The sculptor chose to make them look unexaggeratedly human, and tortured - the blackamoors are men, in a pain both physical and spiritual.

I found myself wondering if the sculptor was an abolitionist.

2) Yesterday, I drove through the Magic Roundabout in Swindon. It was absolutely horrible.

Today: Getting a phone, then probably going to Devizes once I'm done shopping in Marlborough.

Problem I'm putting off thinking about solving: How to get those things I buy here home to Perth. I may be posting things periodically. *cough*

Gordon Brown is on the television, briefly. I am startled by his complete absence of charisma, appeal, or apparent positive qualities.

Me: How did that man ever become Prime Minister of a country?

Uncle Ian: By default.
