Moments of Permanence - April 12th, 2009

About April 12th, 2009

08:52 pm
This morning, at church, after a beautifully joyous Easter Sunday service (combined with a baptism, as well), I paused to light a candle for a boy named Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, who hanged himself with an extension cord after bullies made his life a living hell for being "gay", and teachers responded to his being threatened with physical harm by making him sit with her at lunch for a week.

His mother was not ignoring the problem. She called the school every week, trying to get the school authorities to intervene in a helpful way.

They didn't.

And an eleven-year-old boy killed himself in his bedroom in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Nothing will make that better. Nothing will rescue his mother from the living hell to which she is now condemned.

But I lit a candle, and I prayed for him, and I hope, one day, the world is a better place than this.
