OH MY GOD THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE IS THE AWESOMEST THING IN THE HISTORY OF AWESOME SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS YOU HAVE NO IDEA

Unless you've seen it, already, and even then, seriously, some people clearly do not get how awesome it is because they don't realise just how much they rocked out at some very important points.

Spoilery discussion may come later, but first, a couple of non-spoilery comments:

1) Words can not express my absolute joy and delight that the computer voice was still Majel Barrett Roddenberry. It's not Star Trek unless it contains Majel Barrett Roddenberry.

2) Tally: I cried twice, hyperventilated at least six times, and was bouncing in my seat at points with sheer thrill and joy.

3) And occasional swoon.

I want to point, again, to my essay: Series on the Edge of Forever: the Future History of Star Trek, because I want people to understand what a big deal Star Trek is and should be. Star Trek is part of history in ways that seriously deserve to be recognised.

A quotation I used, that shows a lot of why: "Civil rights came of age in the sixties, and so did I - right here in the South. You can pretty well imagine my environment, so let's say that Spock and Star Trek did as much to change my views as my watching civil rights workers being hosed down and badgered with police dogs." I've recently seen people bringing up Nichelle Nichols' story of being encouraged to stay with Star Trek by Dr. King, and I'm like... people, you ought to know this stuff. This is important history. Nichelle Nichols was an inspiration to many people, for good reasons.

Looking over it, I'd write a better essay now, but still.

Anyway. Yes. Stuff and NO SERIOUSLY PEOPLE THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME BEYOND THE TELLING OF IT THERE IS MORE AWESOME THAN CAN BE CONTAINED IN JUST ONE POST AND SO MUCH SQUEE AND SERIOUSLY DID I MENTION I LOVED IT REALLY A LOT.

My seriously difficult efforts to remain unspoiled? So worth it, I loved every second of that movie.

Oh man, was it not awesome? I loved it so very much. I did have a couple of niggles with it, but yes: awesome. (I just got back from seeing it then.)

..now I want to see it again!

My niggles were few, and far outweighed by my squee at how awesome it was (including with some very cool, sometimes subtle references to Awesome Star Trek History stuff).

The essay is oooold and now I've looked at it again and people are getting into Trek again and seeing how awesome this universe is, I find myself wanting to rewrite it - better, and longer, without the word limit I had then.

But I have a 4,500 word essay to write NOW and then another essay and a couple of assignments and then exams, NOT BEFORE SEMESTER IS OVER DAMMIT basically...

Hmm, still parsing my thoughts and wanting to see it again before I get into serious meta. Fic recs are good.

Noting that in this universe my slash love is for Jim and Bones, despite the fact that TOS was, for me, a mixture of:

Kirk/Spock OTP THEIR LOVE IS SO TRUE AND PURE

Spock/McCoy BFF THEIR LOVE IS SO BICKERY

Spock/Chapel one true angst, seriously, she is SO IN LOVE WITH HIM and he knows it and he loves and respects her but Not That Way and it can NEVER BE That Way and she knows that too and accepts it and just loves him and this can NEVER BE SPOKEN OF and that one episode, where the asshole aliens use this to taunt and hurt them both, forcing him to kiss her, forcing them both to acknowledge this, it is the most HEARTBREAKING ANGST EVER

Scotty/Enterprise OTP MESS WITH HIS SHIP AND HE WILL CUT A BITCH

Also, in my head... actually, this is going to be a post all its own, I think.

I was so sad when I heard Majel died just after completing her voice work, because I don't know what they're going to do for the next movie.

Maybe her voice has been uploaded to something and computers will make it work now?

I hope so. Or that they can structure the computer's script to make use of previous lines, or something.

I was heartbroken when I found out Majel had died, because she was just such an amazing, wonderful woman. I loved her and it hurts that I'm never going to get to meet her now. I wonder just how much I'll regret that I surrendered my first chance to meet Nichelle Nichols, last year, due to pain issues - they're the only two Star Trek people I've really, really wanted to meet.

(I know Uhura was criminally underused and all, but I did a lot of research when I wrote that Star Trek essay, which I'm now finding myself wanting to rewrite But Better and without the word limit, and I kind of fell in love with Nichelle Nichols in the process.)

I think my only quibble with the otherwise-brilliant casting of new Star Trek was actually Uhura. Zoe Saldana wasn't quite awesome enough - she was good, but just didn't quite have that flair of sheer unadulterated awesome that Uhura ought to have. Someone on my friends list was suggesting Gabrielle Union to play Number One - I like that idea, but I think she would have been brilliant as Uhura, too.

... Sorry, I'm being rambly. And there's a whole other post I could write about my squee over the way they made Uhura's first name a Thing in the movie. Hee.

... man, I want to watch it again, like, now.
